Newport News Orthopaedic Surgeon Performs Virginia's
First Outpatient Total Hip Replacement

Dr. Mark McFarland

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. (August 3, 2010) - A Hampton resident is experiencing a comfortable recovery at home as the recipient of a total hip replacement done on an Outpatient basis. The first surgery of its kind in Virginia was performed by Dr. Mark W. McFarland, orthopaedic surgeon with the Orthopaedic & Spine Center, on August 2nd, at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, VA.

The patient - 63 years of age - received his total hip replacement using the Direct Anterior Muscle Sparing Approach, in which the hip replacement is implanted through an incision in the front of the hip vs. the traditional posterior or rear approach. This type of surgery is also noted for its smaller incision length and because it does not require the cutting of the major muscles of the hip and buttocks.

"I am pleased to report that my patient went home 8 hours after his total hip replacement, and is now resting and recovering comfortably with his family", said Dr. Mcfarland. "I anticipate he will do very well at home during his recuperation with the support of his family and our at-home nursing care partners."

Just about a month ago, one of Dr. McFarland's colleagues, Dr. Boyd W. Haynes, III, performed the first outpatient total knee replacement in Virginia. Dr. McFarland is the second surgeon at OSC to perform a landmark outpatient total joint procedure.

"I see this as a logical progression in how we deliver healthcare services to patients. With the advent of a more nationalized healthcare system, there will be significant changes in the way we rehabilitate patients after surgery," explains Dr. McFarland. "Keeping that in mind, an innovative outpatient joint replacement program like ours makes sense. While this is not feasible for everyone considering hip replacement, it is great to be able to offer this option to the Hampton Roads community."

Dr. McFarland is a graduate of the Oklahoma State University School of Osteopathic Medicine and holds a Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery from the Florida Spine Institute.
