“If I treat all of my patients as if they are family, then I can be assured they will get the best possible care.”
An education founded in excellence
Education is the foundation for any profession. For this reason, I have
a strong desire and drive to continually expand my knowledge of the
physical therapy field. I believe it is my responsibility to the
patients, physicians, and students I serve to have the most dynamic and
up-to-date knowledge base available.
Not only do I feel it is each professional’s responsibility to engage in lifetime continuing education, I also feel it is very important to be an educator. This was a primary motivator for me in pursuing and obtaining my Master’s in Health Education. This program provided me the tools necessary to impart knowledge to those in the community desiring to better their lifestyles. It has also given me the skills to better instruct patients, peers, and students I have had the privilege of working with.
An ongoing quest for knowledge
I began my professional career as a Certified Athletic Trainer, working
with the NCAA Division One East Carolina University football, baseball
and soccer programs. During my career as an athletic trainer, I
discovered that my primary interest was in the rehabilitation aspect of
my responsibilities. It was this discovery that led me to the
profession of physical therapy and allowed me to vastly increase my
knowledge of physical rehabilitation.
As mentioned earlier, I have a strong drive to advance my knowledge and to educate others. This is demonstrated in my seeking and obtaining a certification in Sportsmetrics, a functional, plyometric program designed to instruct female athletes in proper jumping techniques, in order to prevent and rehabilitate athletes from serious knee injuries.
Serving my community
Growing up in a very small town, I have always had a sense of what it
means and what it takes to help others. As an undergraduate, my
fraternity’s motto was “the helping hand”. It is this
philosophy and background that I bring to my patient care. If I treat
all of my patients as if they are family, then I can be assured they
will get the best possible care.
