Managing pain is an important part of your treatment and recovery from an orthopaedic disorder or injury. Pain can cause sleepnessness, depression and limitations on your ability to move — all of which can slow down your recovery. It is important to manage your pain before it becomes too intense. Be sure to tell your doctor when you have pain and discuss ways to deal with the pain. For most people, back pain tends to get better within two weeks to three months. However, the sooner you treat pain, the less likely it is to get worse or cause other complications.

Epidural Steroid Injections (ESI) have been found to be an effective treatment for some patients who are suffering from low back pain due to nerve impingement. Commonly, nerves which supply the back or legs are compressed near the spine either by a bulging disc, bone spur or scar tissue. This causes the nerve to become irritated or swollen. The epidural injection delivers a long-lasting steroid and an anesthetic agent to the irritated and inflamed spinal nerve. The effects of ESI vary, with pain relief lasting for one week or up to one year. The goal is to reduce pain so that patients may resume their normal activities and, in some cases, continue a physical therapy program.

Usually, pain is treated beginning with the least invasive and least potent measures first. If these don’t work, your doctor will then try stronger approaches. As specialists in pain management, we are ideally suited to help patients with acute and chronic pain problems. We offer a full range of diagnostic testing, such as EMG, as well as many treatment plans that are non-surgical in nature, including state-of-the-art facilities for physical therapy.
