I had a lumbar fusion on June 8th of this year, performed by the McFarland team. Every step of the way exceeded my expectations. Dr. Mark McFarland listened to me, answered questions, and explained in a way that made me comfortable with the whole process.
I had a lumbar fusion six years earlier (different hospital and doctor), my leg and foot have bothered me ever since. Don’t get me wrong, that surgery was necessary, and I was much better off after the 1st procedure than before. However, over the six years, the pain and numbness worsened. My primary care doctor talked to me about going back to my previous surgeon. I asked if he could provide another referral, he sent me to Dr. McFarland at OSC and I am very thankful!
I don’t want anyone to think that this surgery is easy. I was very sore for about two weeks (mostly my left leg). However, the numbness in my foot was gone almost right away. Within a few days, I did not need the walker, and a few days after that, I could walk a mile or more. Also, I took no pain medication once I left the hospital (24 hours after the surgery) except for Gabapentin. Within a few weeks, I was finished with that too!
By the Fourth of July, I was pain free and medicine free! Incredible! I even sleep thru the night now, for the first time in about 12 years. It has truly changed my life for the better. I am in my 50’s, and I can’t remember the last time I felt this good.
Thank you, OSC! Every member of your team has helped me in different, but meaningful ways. I am very grateful to have found each of you. Please feel free to share my contact information with any hesitant patients. I would be happy to talk to them about my experience with your team and the procedure.
I have seen several doctors at OSC over the years; most recently Dr. Martin Coleman. I was referred to him by Dr. Mark McFarland for shoulder surgery which was successfully completed. Dr. McFarland helped me with back surgeries and knee replacements. In the past, my mother saw Dr. Raj Sureja and we both felt the same about his services and knowledge.
Each experience with the Doctors at OSC has always worked out well. And any interaction with the staff there has only shown me very caring, informative and knowledgeable people.
I would highly recommend the Doctors at OSC – and in addition their support staff.
Thanks for making my surgeries a whole lot easier and with better results than they might have been.

Dr. Mark Mcfarland is AWESOME. Dr. McFarland’s bedside manner, and the time he takes to talk and explain items to his patients is fantastic, and his skills as a surgeon are beyond words. Dr. McFarland recently performed Spine Surgery on my lower back and I am currently 3 months post surgery. I cannot express enough my gratitude to Dr. McFarland. I have had total relief from the pain and numbness I had been experiencing, and I am able to accomplish all the physical actions that I had been unable to do for a long time.
Thank you to Dr. McFarland and the entire staff.
I went to Dr. Mark McFarland for a back injury I sustained at work. He told me what he thought the cause was and that I should do Physical Therapy before considering surgery or other options. I 100% supported this decision.
The Physical Therapists I worked with did an awesome job helping figure out what worked and what didn’t. The facilities and equipment was state of the art. The staff is very knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. And the best part is I felt like Dr. Jamie Swale and Fred Wintermantel were my friends. I hope to see them again, but not in these circumstances.
I would recommend OSC to anyone with an injury or needing physical therapy. Thanks again Dr. McFarland, Jamie, Fred, and everyone else who helped me.
Serious neck pain and some lost range of motion brought me to OSC to see Dr. Mark McFarland. Dr. McFarland was very helpful by answering all of my many questions, while diagnosing my problem and recommending a course of action.
After some initial conservative measures, we decided to proceed with a Cervical Fusion and Discectomy. As a professional pilot, I was a bit nervous about such a procedure. When the surgery day came, everything seemed to go like clockwork and the results were amazing. Less than 10 days after the surgery, I was back up flying again. At the three month point, I was given the go ahead for any and all activities. My neck no longer hurts and I have 100% of my range of motion. I even grew a quarter of an inch (LOL).
I am very grateful for Dr. McFarland’s skill and professionalism as well as all the staff at the Orthopaedic & Spine Center.
I injured my spine lifting a small boat engine onto my boat, from a floating dock. Twisting and turning, while lifting and lowering 60 lbs. of engine on a moving dock, may not have been the best idea. All of a sudden, I felt a dull pain in my lower back that got worse the more I moved. Soon, I had terrible pain down my left leg, buttock and thigh. In another couple of days, horrible calf cramps and numbness in the foot and leg developed. My leg also felt weak, like it was going to give out on me. I drive a lot for my job as a financial advisor and driving caused pain. Even sitting in a chair watching TV was uncomfortable. I was pretty miserable. My wife made me an appointment at OSC.
I saw Dr. Mark McFarland, who ordered x-rays and told me that, based on my symptoms, he felt I had a disc herniation. He prescribed oral steroids. He also prescribed pain pills and muscle relaxers, which helped me sleep because I only took them at night. He also ordered an MRI of my lower spine to find out if I had a disc herniation or some other spine problem. I had to wait three weeks before an MRI appointment was available.
The MRI showed a large disc rupture in my lower spine. Dr. McFarland recommended an epidural steroid injection to help ease the inflammation. I had the injection and it helped to ease the pain, numbness and cramping, enough to make it bearable, so I could work and get around. Dr. McFarland told me the disc material was really pressing on my nerve and he was surprised I could walk and drive as well as I had been. He recommended an outpatient surgery called a lumbar microsdiscectomy to remove the disc material pressing on the nerve. I agreed that surgery was the best option to help me recover with the least amount of downtime from work. I wanted to fix the problem for good and feel better.
Dr. McFarland performed the surgery at Mary Immaculate Hospital. I felt immediate relief when I awoke from the anesthesia. After a few hours in recovery, I went home the same day. I had an easy recuperation period. I wore my back brace, which didn’t bother me at all, most of the time, unless I was laying in bed sleeping. The Home Health Nurse and the Physical Therapist that came to my house, both said that I was doing so great, they weren’t really needed. Again, I only took pain medication at night to help with sleep. I watched a lot of Netflix, snacked and got really bored. I felt so good, I just wanted to get out of the house. After my two week check up, Dr. McFarland released me to drive and work, with just a few lifting restrictions.
In the three weeks after my surgery, almost all of my previous symptoms disappeared and soon went away completely. It was incredible. I know that people are afraid of spine surgery, but they shouldn’t be! I would highly recommend Dr. McFarland to anyone with spine issues!
I had a Kyphoplasty procedure on 4-18-18 at OSC. My physician was Dr. Mark McFarland. He was very informative and spent time explaining the procedure to me.
I was very satisfied with him and his staff, especially Stacy, Mary and Zach. I will review the results in a couple of weeks. Thanks so much!

My initial phase of treatment was for back pain in 2013 with Dr. Mark McFarland. He didn’t jump right in with the knife, but did the best they could with what they had. This year, I saw Dr. Raj Sureja and Monica Beckett – NP, while I awaited a multi-level fusion with Dr. Jeffrey Carlson.
The care, treatment and overall professionalism of the entire staff was exceptional and exceeded my expectations at every level both pre- and post-op. With social media presence and with both good and bad reviews widely available, I was skeptical. However, I can not say enough good things about the staff. They were very pleasant and concerned and I have seen quite of few members of their entire staff. I would refer my parents, children and others I care about for treatment here, without question.
Dr. Carlson performed my multi-level lumbar fusion and the difference was incredible. Recovery takes time, but ultimately, I could tell he had solved the underlying issues for which I was being treated and had done so with informative care and precision. Excellent faculty, facility and the very best Doctors in my opinion. It was and is very important that I get back to work quickly and their number one concern was restoring my ability to resume as many activities as possible and to live as limitless of a life as possible. To Drs. Carlson, McFarland, Sureja and your staff, you’re excellent providers when I couldn’t say anything but the best regarding your service and care.
I started seeing Doctor McFarland in 2005. He and the staff at OSC have always been wonderful!
I’ve had 2 surgeries, with success, and know my Degenerative Joint Disease and Arthritis will always be treated correctly at OSC!
I was born with many handicaps and I once had a doctor in Norfolk, but my back never was right. I had car accident and I was told Dr. Jeffrey Carlson was the best. He has done three back surgeries for me and I have to tell you, I won’t let anyone touch me but Dr. Carlson ! He is the best!
I have had two knee replacements and one hip replacement and the other doctors at OSC did them. People ask me, “Cindy, how do you even move with all the rods and equipment ?” I tell them “go see these doctors and if you have back problems, go to Dr. Carlson. He has the hands of a angel and GOD gave him a gift!”
Whenever something happens, they get you right in for an appointment. All the staff are so kind. Take my advice and go to this office, you will not be sorry. I mean what I say, I tell everyone to go there.
I also want to give credit to the pain doctors also, because they are so nice. Dr. Raj Sureja.
You can’t do better than OSC. Thank you for letting me speak.
