Dr. John Burrow is one of the good guys! The best Ortho Doctor….
The four years I have been going to him, he has saved me from much pain! Now that I’m moving to Rhode Island….I wish I could take him with me! I’m telling anyone, if you want some help in feeling better, knees, hands, ankles…he is the Dr. to go see!
Also, Dr. Burrow sent me to Dr. Boyd Haynes…he too was outstanding! Nothing about OSC I did not like…Thank you!
I’m 71 years old and have been a patient of Dr. Boyd W. Haynes III for over 25 years.
I enjoy being physically active, and, as a result, my body has paid the price. Dr. Haynes has always been keenly aware of my desire to get back into action as soon as possible after injuries, mishaps and age-related conditions. He has performed orthoscopic surgery on both knees (running related), surgically removed calcium build up in my big toe (golf cart accident), treated my shoulder’s AC joint (racquetball) and recently treated 5 broken ribs (cycling). Dr. Haynes followed up each surgery/procedure with a prescribed regimen of exercise and/or rest, as necessary, to resume my normal activities.
In recent years I’ve had a chronic, though tolerable osteoarthritic condition in both knees. Although periodic cortisone injections helped for a while, within less than three months, the pain and locking up of the knee joint would return, making normal physical activities, including golf, difficult to perform at a comfortable level.
Dr. Haynes recommended that I begin a series of three Euflexxa knee injections. The injections were completed in April 2018 and six months later I am still pain free and as active as like to be!
It’s been a great experience to have such a knowledgeable, professional and caring Orthopedic Surgeon, such as Dr. Haynes, take genuine interest in, and positive action toward my health and physical resiliency.
I’m a most lucky and grateful patient.
Thank you Dr. Haynes!
It’s my absolute pleasure to recommend Dr. Paige Tretter at the OSC Physical Therapy Center. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in therapy with Dr. Tretter and the Therapy Techs that she assigned to help me in my therapy. Dr. Tretter’s expertise in therapy is a huge advantage to the entire office. Dr. Tretter has always been an absolute joy to work with in my healing process. Always positive, smiling and kind.
Dr. Tretter and the therapy techs work as true team players with all patients, giving us an positive outlook even when we thought we could not do an exercise, but we did. Dr. Tretter and Therapy Techs won’t let you say you can’t. Oh, yes you can! And we did prevail! I am going to miss that family atmosphere at the Physical Therapy office. Dr. Tretter said you can always drop by and say hello. You can believe I will.
I have arthritis in both knees, my left knee was where I could barely get around, was in a lot of pain and could not lift or move on the left side. After my therapy at OSC, I feel great, more mobile, not depressed and very positive. I will follow all the exercises that I learned to keep myself mobile.

My knees had been bone-on-bone for some time. I had tried gel and cortisone injections when I lived in Florida. Surgery worried me; the surgery itself, fear of uncontrolled pain, the rehab and the downtime. Dr. Jenny Andrus, Pain Management Specialist at OSC, provided another option: nerve blocks. These did give me temporary relief and the time I needed to come to grips with having knee replacement surgery.
Dr. Boyd Haynes, also with OSC, was totally prepared for my questions about knee replacement. I immediately felt more at ease about the surgery. I did the recommended strengthening exercises prior to surgery. I know this helped me in rehab.
Both of my knee replacements were done as outpatient. Dr. Haynes’ post surgery orders provide for exceptional pain relief. The idea of standing up on a new knee 1-2 hours after surgery is unbelievable, but I did it and was comfortable!
The evening after surgery, Dr. Haynes called to check on me. I have never had a doctor do that…His office called the next day to check again!
I am still rehabbing the 2nd knee. But it is amazing to be able to get out of a chair, walk and stand for extended periods without pain. Now, I kick myself for waiting so long to have knee replacement.
I am forever grateful to Dr. Haynes, Dr. Andrus and the entire OSC team for their expertise and care.
Dr. Boyd Haynes is always so positive and funny. He makes me laugh before he has Chris inject my knees!! Laughter seems to help in those stressful and painful situations.
I can’t think of anything that you can do to improve your practice. What I enjoy most about coming to OSC is Dr. Haynes’ funny attitude. He really enjoys his work and that makes me trust him so much more.
At 62 years old I found myself in need of a good orthopedic doctor in anticipation of future knee surgery. I have been having pain in my left knee for several years which has been controlled over time with 3 steroid injections. However, my last steroid injection relieved my pain for less than 2 months. I knew the next step would have to be viscous knee injections or surgery.
I put it off as long as I could, but the pain in my left knee became constant and was inhibiting my daily activities. I asked a nurse friend of mine who she would have do surgery on her own knee and she immediately said Dr. Boyd Haynes. I did some research and had my first appointment in October 2017.
Dr. Haynes looked at my x-rays, listened to my history of my knee problems, and then we had a discussion of options. I wanted to do whatever I could do to relieve my knee pain without surgery, to which Dr. Haynes agreed. I started on Voltaren pills to see if that would help. After two weeks my pain was still significant, so we decided on a plan of 5 Supartz injections over a 5 week period.
On November 13 I received my first left knee injection, administered by Chris Schwizer, PA-C.
I was told that midway through my injections my insurance, Anthem, was going to stop covering these injections. That was very disturbing news. It especially made no sense to me as I had pain relief within 4 hours of my 1st injection! The next day I was so happy to actually be walking without the constant pain I had been having for months. When I returned for my 2nd injection on Nov 20, Chris said it’s not typical that a patient experiences pain relief after only 1 injection. The fact that I had was promising. I received my 3rd injection on Nov 27th and immediately went out of state due to a death in the family. This meant an interruption in my injections that could not be helped and the staff were understanding of my situation.
I was away for two weeks in which I did everything related to planning and executing a funeral & luncheon, taking care of a house, and all things associated with being executor of a will. I was in constant motion for two weeks. The ONLY way I was able to do what I needed to do was because I was not having pain in my left knee. I can’t tell you what a difference that made to my physical and emotional state during that difficult time.
I returned to have my 4th and 5th injections December 12 & 19. It was upsetting to have to pay more because Anthem decided these type of injections ‘don’t work.’ I am here to tell you that they do, in fact, work very well. It is March, 2018 and I still have pain relief. I will be writing to Anthem in protest of their decision & to inform them of my success with injections which allowed me to avoid costly surgery.
I am thankful to Dr. Haynes and his staff for the professional, caring treatment I received. I plan to continue seeing Dr. Haynes when I need further injections. Based on my personal experience and the testimonials of many others, I know if I ever need knee surgery, he is the surgeon for me. I highly recommend Dr. Haynes for anyone looking for an orthopedic doctor who knows what he’s doing and has his patient’s best interests at heart.
I had my left knee replaced in 2012 with Dr. Boyd Haynes and it went very well! Everything is still going well. I can do everything I used to do and more. The hard work was worth it!
5 years later (today) I went in for pain in the right knee. So happy with Dr. Haynes and the whole OSC team. He always makes me feel at ease. We have a treatment plan in place. Then, he had Chris, the PA, give me a cortisone shot. Chris was outstanding as well.
Thank you, Dr. Haynes, for always being there. You guys are awesome!
Dr. Boyd Haynes is always so positive and funny. He makes me laugh before injecting my knees!! Laughter seems to help in those stressful and painful situations.
I can’t think of anything you could do to make my experience at OSC better. Dr. Haynes’ funny attitude contributes the most to my satisfaction as his patient. He really enjoys his work and that makes me trust him so much more.
Dr. Boyd Haynes explains me to me exactly what’s going on with my knees, and assures me he will do everything within his power to relieve me of my pain, without surgery. In my opinion, Dr. Haynes is straight forward and to the point. He has a great smile. And I love how he is on time for his appointments. If the appointment is at 8 AM, you are in at 8 AM!
About eight years ago, I had surgery to replace my left knee joint at a practice in another city. Six months later, the joint failed and I had to have it done all over again. At the time, I was told that my right knee would likely need to be replaced at some point in the future as well.
Having had the bad experience that I did, I was very reluctant to have the right knee looked at when it started giving me troubles after a recent airline flight home. I asked a doctor at another specialty practice in Newport News to recommend an orthopedic surgeon to me. He suggested Dr. Boyd Haynes. Appreciatively, he was able to see me on relatively short notice. I made the appointment and fully expected that he would tell me that the time had come for surgery on my right knee.
To my surprise, he recommended a course of oral medication, one prescription and two over the counter medicines. The Rx medicine took about a week to calm the inflammation in the joint, and the combination of over the counter pain med and the glucosamine/chondroitin worked together to enable me to reengage in the activities that I enjoy, but which I could not do after the recent flare up. These include about 45 minutes on the elliptical daily and riding my bike.
At 64, I am appreciative to Dr. Haynes for his suggestions to avoid surgery and still provide a solution to my knee pain. I feel that I am back to my normal routine again and the whole matter was resolved in about a month. I may need the surgery at some point in the future, but, for now, I am just as glad that I do not. I am grateful to Dr. Haynes and his advice.
