My story is rethinking life with severe Osteoarthritis (OA), albeit “tri-compartmental O/A bone-on-bone” in my left knee. The disease was severe and getting progressively worse. The pain in my left knee caused me to miss out on family activities and just getting around in general. Working with Dr. Boyd Haynes and his PA, Christopher Schwizer, collectively we came up with a plan. I was comfortable going to Mary Immaculate Hospital for surgery, after all, I have heard positive stories about the hospital. This made my journey relatively easy.
I had a CT scan on my left knee for a ConforMIS designed knee implant. All of my information was sent to Boston, MA. The implant hardware was to fit my knee like a glove, perfect fit. My surgery was set for 12 Sept 2018. All went well and I was released the next day, with no pain.
The next few weeks were spent with OSC Physical Therapy (PT). Mr. Jim Koske, MPT, and Ms. Victoria Skay, LPTA, developed a series of exercises to increase my range of motion (ROM) and quad strength for my left knee. At the end of two weeks, my ROM was 98 per cent. However was expecting to achieve more. It is anticipated by 18 Dec., 2018 (next appointment) that I will successfully achieve 105 degrees, if not more.
My personal thanks to Dr. Haynes, his staff and to OSC PT, that made me do the tough things in order to get better. It was a stellar performance by all to get me back to a new normal life. Again, my personal thanks.
I was blessed to have Dr. Boyd Haynes do the replacement surgery for my left hip in August 2016 and my right knee most recently this past June 2018. With my left hip, I spent two nights in the hospital and had very little pain. With my right knee, I was up and out of the hospital in less then 24 hours!
I was amazed at how good I felt and how little pain I had. I started rehab the next day. Dr. Haynes is very professional and yet very kind and caring. You know exactly what to expect and what you must do to get back on your feet again. He is an excellent surgeon and you know you are in good hands. He’s the best!!
My knees had been bone-on-bone for some time. I had tried gel and cortisone injections when I lived in Florida. Surgery worried me; the surgery itself, fear of uncontrolled pain, the rehab and the downtime. Dr. Jenny Andrus, Pain Management Specialist at OSC, provided another option: nerve blocks. These did give me temporary relief and the time I needed to come to grips with having knee replacement surgery.
Dr. Boyd Haynes, also with OSC, was totally prepared for my questions about knee replacement. I immediately felt more at ease about the surgery. I did the recommended strengthening exercises prior to surgery. I know this helped me in rehab.
Both of my knee replacements were done as outpatient. Dr. Haynes’ post surgery orders provide for exceptional pain relief. The idea of standing up on a new knee 1-2 hours after surgery is unbelievable, but I did it and was comfortable!
The evening after surgery, Dr. Haynes called to check on me. I have never had a doctor do that…His office called the next day to check again!
I am still rehabbing the 2nd knee. But it is amazing to be able to get out of a chair, walk and stand for extended periods without pain. Now, I kick myself for waiting so long to have knee replacement.
I am forever grateful to Dr. Haynes, Dr. Andrus and the entire OSC team for their expertise and care.
In March 2017, I had a total left knee replacement performed by Dr. Boyd Haynes. My physical therapy was at OSC Physical Therapy Center. Dr. Tom Toothaker met with me and designed a physical therapy program for me.
I worked very hard with him and his staff to increase the flexibility and range of motion necessary to regain full use of my left knee. It was a long, very painful process and, sometimes, I felt that I had hit a brick wall. I kept working, and with the help of Dr. Toothaker and his staff, I continued to improve. At the one year mark, I had regained my full range of motion. I still have soreness, but I continue to exercise and improve.
In the future, I will need to have a total right knee replacement done. I will schedule this surgery with Dr. Boyd Haynes again. I will also definitely do my physical therapy at OSC with Dr. Toothaker. I highly recommend this facility. This staff is well-trained and their expertise was THE essential element in my recovery.
In March 2017, I had a total knee replacement. Dr. Boyd Haynes was my surgeon and he did an excellent job. By the time I had surgery, my left knee was deformed (turning inward), very painful and I was walking with a cane. After much physical therapy and exercise, that knee is back to normal. I was up and walking the day of the surgery, but it took months of pain and exercise for me to regain my full range of motion and for the pain to subside. Dr. Haynes was correct when he told me it could take up to a year to fully recover from the surgery.
It has now been 15 months and I feel that I am continuing to improve. Although I am definitely not looking forward to it, I will be seeing Dr. Haynes in the near future to schedule a total knee replacement for my right knee. I know I will be looking at another year of pain and hard work to recover, but I would not want any other doctor to perform this surgery. I have total confidence in Dr. Haynes and the staff at Orthopaedic and Spine Center.
I had my left knee replaced in 2012 with Dr. Boyd Haynes and it went very well! Everything is still going well. I can do everything I used to do and more. The hard work was worth it!
5 years later (today) I went in for pain in the right knee. So happy with Dr. Haynes and the whole OSC team. He always makes me feel at ease. We have a treatment plan in place. Then, he had Chris, the PA, give me a cortisone shot. Chris was outstanding as well.
Thank you, Dr. Haynes, for always being there. You guys are awesome!
I would like to commend my personal physician, Dr. Boyd Haynes, who recently handled both my knee replacement surgeries. Dr. Haynes epitomizes the word “preeminence,” as a consummate professional with both superb skills as a surgeon, as well as an excellent “bedside” manner. I liked his conservative and logical approach to attacking both my knee issues. Due to his professionalism, by the time the decision was made to have surgery, I felt extremely comfortable with Dr. Haynes.
Needless to say, Dr. Haynes made me feel very confident in both procedures, from start to finish. He also did an excellent job with follow up after the surgery. I am now several months out from my knee replacement. I am very grateful to be back to working out and returning to my previous level of activity.
In conclusion, I believe without a doubt, Dr. Haynes sets the standard for service in the healthcare field. My sincere appreciation for the help Dr. Haynes and the OSC team has provided me.
Meet the biggest chicken in the world, me! I can’t tell you how scared I was and how much I dreaded a complete knee replacement. Thankfully, I haven’t had to deal with many hospital stays and I’m afraid of needles. If I had it my way, I’d never step foot in a hospital again. However, if I ever do need my other knee replaced, I’m going straight to Dr. Boyd Haynes for the procedure with no reservation and no fear.
I can attest to the excellent care I received and truly, I don’t feel the new knee AT ALL, anytime. Rumor has it, I may have the other knee replaced eventually and I’m not dreading the possibility. Granted, you HAVE TO LISTEN to him and DO WHAT HE SAYS. He said to me, “I’ll do my job, but you have to do yours too”. By that he meant that rehab is a crucial part of a successful recovery. Thanks to my daughter, she helped me with my rehab and I worked hard. For that, after about 4 weeks, I was able to come to my follow up visit without the help of a cane!
Record recovery everyone said. Dr. Haynes was wonderful and you can be sure you’re in good hands. My recommendation is unconditional! Thanks again, Dr. Haynes!
Dr. Boyd Haynes did my first total knee replacement in October 2009 and my second one in March 2010. Before my knee replacements, I was in severe pain every day. My daily life had changed from being active to barely being able to go to the grocery store or sleep through the night. While the recovery was painful and required a dedication to the Physical Therapy, I can truly say it was totally worth it.
I have been 100% pain free for many years now and I can’t thank Dr. Haynes enough his professionalism, kindness and care. Thanks so much, Dr. Haynes!
My name is Anthony Sam and I’m a 58 year old from Denver, CO, who spent 20 years in the US Navy and another 11 years as a Mechanic for NAVSEA Systems.
My Doctor is Jeffrey Carlson and I was seen by him for Severe Chronic Osteoarthritis of my right and left knee. My knee pain can be traced back to my time in the Navy and then was dramatically increased due to my physically intensive duties working as a Ship Yard Mechanic.
I have, in the past, had multiple knee surgeries on both of my knees, as well as countless injections to replace my Synovial Fluid. My knee pain had steadily gotten worse since my 1st knee surgery in 2004, to the point I had to take a disability retirement in 2015, during which I began to seek out treatment for my knee pain.
I first met Dr. Carlson in May of 2015. I have to say I very impressed from the moment I walked into his office at OSC. Dr. Carlson was to the point and suggested to me that I really should have my knees replaced. I was more than happy to have him do the procedure.
Dr. Carlson replaced my right knee in July of 2016 and that went so well that I had Dr. Carlson replace my left knee in February of 2017. As of today,I pain free and I have been given a new lease on my life going forward. I was always a very active person, but my knee pain had really taken a toll on my life style. but as of now I can actually go through my entire day without any real issues.
I would highly recommend Dr. Carlson and the entire OSC Staff, from Check-in to the Physical Therapy Department. I truly feel lucky to have met a 1st Class Ortho Surgeon in Dr. Carlson. Again, I am truly grateful on how things are going for me. Thank You.
