My second knee replacement was completed in December 2019 and performed by my most trusted OSC Physician, Dr Boyd Haynes.
Although this knee replacement was physically challenging (due to intense pain and swelling) in the beginning, I had no fears because I knew I was in the best hands of the most professional Physical Therapy Center on the Peninsula, OSC Therapy Center.
Dr. Tom Toothaker, Clinic Director of OSC Physical Therapy and Josh Hancock, Physical Therapist Assistant, guided me through 3+ months of many challenging exercises; various pain relief techniques, motivation when I felt down due to my impatience and professional genuine care!!
Thanks to Dr. Toothaker, PTA Hancock, and the great team of assistants, for improving the quality of my life once again! I am now fully mobile; walking without my cane, squatting and most importantly racing up and down stairs for the first time in many, many years.
My friends can’t believe how well I did with my PT and how I was motivated by the OSC staff! I highly recommend your facility to anyone! Thank you all so much for helping me to walk once again without pain!
I had Total Knee Replacement (TKR) on February 5, 2020. I was so afraid going into this surgery but I can honestly say it was so much better than I expected. Dr. Boyd Haynes did a great job, my knee is so strong now and I can do all of my daily activities…finally! He has such a great bedside manner and answered all my concerns and is so reassuring.
I did Physical Therapy at OSC with Dr. Paige Tretter and Fred Wintermantel. Again, a great experience! They are both excellent and always were encouraging and kept me informed of how I was progressing. A great staff there, from the front desk to the ladies that helped me through my exercises. I appreciate everyone of you.
Again, thank you all so much !!! I’ll definitely recommend OSC.
I’m writing on behalf of my husband. He had a total knee replacement on 2/19/20, performed by OSC’s Dr. Boyd Haynes. I’ve been so impressed with the entire process, from the scheduling of the surgery to how quickly his disability paperwork was submitted, to the entire experience at the hospital. We were both greeted so nicely at Mary Immaculate Hospital..all of the nurses were fantastic, the care he got was great. While he was in the recovery area, one of the nurses called twice to update me on his progress. His surgery was at 7:30 AM and we were home by noon.
That night, I got a call from Dr. Haynes to check on how my husband was doing. That personal touch, is unheard of these days! Encompass Home Health called the night of his surgery and set up times for the nurse and physical therapist to come out to our home the next day. I had 100% confidence in both the nurse and Physical Therapists. The Physical Therapist, Sam, she was fantastic. She really got him moving and motivated. He stopped using the walker most of the time on day 4.
He’s now 3 weeks post-op and no longer is even using the cane. He has been doing outpatient Physical Therapy w/ Dr. Tom Toothaker at OSC, he is really wonderful. He’s following the home exercise program that Tom made for him.
From the spouse’s point of view, this entire experience was wonderful. With Dr. Haynes surgical skill, with the Home Health PT and Tom’s physical therapy program, my husband is having a wonderful recovery. I would highly recommend Dr. Boyd Haynes and OSC to everyone!!
After a year of ongoing right knee pain, my doctor (at a different practice) decided I needed a partial knee replacement. In November, 2018, I had the surgery performed. For the first three weeks after surgery, I was improving steadily. In the fourth week, I started to have pain in and above the knee, with a clicking or crackling feeling. My doctor told me all of this was normal and that it would take a year to heal.
After months of pain, in October, 2019 he performed surgery to remove scar tissue from the previous surgery and to correct a torn meniscus. Six weeks later, the pre-surgical pains were still there.
A friend and patient of Dr. Boyd Haynes recommended that I see him. I did, and after taking x-rays and reviewing my previous MRI, he said I would need a total knee replacement to correct the problems.
Dr. Haynes performed the surgery in mid-February, 2020. During surgery, he found and removed a large bone fragment embedded in the muscle and tendon. Within one week of surgery, I was able to switch from a walker to a cane. On the twelfth day after surgery, I was able to walk up stairs normally. This was weeks earlier than my previous surgery with a different doctor. I realize that not everyone will be able to do this in twelve days without pain, but I give full credit to Dr. Haynes and his surgical team for their excellent work to allow my quick recovery.
I am a 71-year-old outdoorsy woman living in Mathews County, VA. I started seeing Dr. Boyd Haynes for my knee over eight years ago. My knees were in bad shape back then, but I told him I didn’t want to do replacement. So, he worked with me, patiently trying every type of injection, physical therapy, etc. for years.
Eventually my knee became so bad, I couldn’t get on or off my horse without assistance, and I rode in constant pain. My knee woke me up at night, and I couldn’t easily go up or down stairs. I couldn’t even get out of my kayak! I finally decided to bite the bullet and get a new knee.
I was terrified (the reason I put it off so long), but my results were fabulous! I am so pleased Dr. Haynes was my surgeon. I was up and around quickly. I can get on and off my horse with no problem. I am riding much better now that I have a functional leg! Life is so much better, I wish I had done it sooner. I even did some hiking in the Canadian Rockies this summer. And, not that it matters, but my scar is barely noticeable.
I highly recommend Dr. Boyd Haynes. When I need my other knee replaced, Dr. Haynes will definitely be my choice.
After Dr. Jeffrey Carlson replaced my second knee, it seemed to heal more slowly and I was dejected. Dr. Carlson wisely took me out of in-home physical therapy and assigned me to Dr. Tom Toothaker at OSC Physical Therapy. I had used them for years and felt comfortable with my OSC PT family of providers.
Tom took my case on personally. His daily encouragement and motivation caused me to try harder and we were able to celebrate the small steps together!
My appointments are at 7:00 AM and I’m not a morning person, but Autumn at the front desk is and she greets each one of us with joyful encouragement. Then Rachel, Tom’s assistant, keeps the session rolling with her positive attitude as we exercise together.
I would like to encourage you to not be afraid of the pain and stress that normally comes with Physical Therapy. You can trust the family at OSC PT to treat you as their most important patient throughout your sessions!
I had my knee replacement surgery on Feb. 27,2019. I am so grateful to Dr. Boyd Haynes. I wonder now why I put it off for so long. If you can get through the first 7-10 days, you’ve got it made.
I strongly recommend Dr. Haynes. He has done a hip replacement in 2011 and now my knee. Fantastic job on both!
My story is rethinking life with severe Osteoarthritis (OA), albeit “tri-compartmental O/A bone-on-bone” in my left knee. The disease was severe and getting progressively worse. The pain in my left knee caused me to miss out on family activities and just getting around in general. Working with Dr. Boyd Haynes and his PA, Christopher Schwizer, collectively we came up with a plan. I was comfortable going to Mary Immaculate Hospital for surgery, after all, I have heard positive stories about the hospital. This made my journey relatively easy.
I had a CT scan on my left knee for a ConforMIS designed knee implant. All of my information was sent to Boston, MA. The implant hardware was to fit my knee like a glove, perfect fit. My surgery was set for 12 Sept 2018. All went well and I was released the next day, with no pain.
The next few weeks were spent with OSC Physical Therapy (PT). Mr. Jim Koske, MPT, and Ms. Victoria Skay, LPTA, developed a series of exercises to increase my range of motion (ROM) and quad strength for my left knee. At the end of two weeks, my ROM was 98 per cent. However was expecting to achieve more. It is anticipated by 18 Dec., 2018 (next appointment) that I will successfully achieve 105 degrees, if not more.
My personal thanks to Dr. Haynes, his staff and to OSC PT, that made me do the tough things in order to get better. It was a stellar performance by all to get me back to a new normal life. Again, my personal thanks.
I was blessed to have Dr. Boyd Haynes do the replacement surgery for my left hip in August 2016 and my right knee most recently this past June 2018. With my left hip, I spent two nights in the hospital and had very little pain. With my right knee, I was up and out of the hospital in less then 24 hours!
I was amazed at how good I felt and how little pain I had. I started rehab the next day. Dr. Haynes is very professional and yet very kind and caring. You know exactly what to expect and what you must do to get back on your feet again. He is an excellent surgeon and you know you are in good hands. He’s the best!!
My knees had been bone-on-bone for some time. I had tried gel and cortisone injections when I lived in Florida. Surgery worried me; the surgery itself, fear of uncontrolled pain, the rehab and the downtime. Dr. Jenny Andrus, Pain Management Specialist at OSC, provided another option: nerve blocks. These did give me temporary relief and the time I needed to come to grips with having knee replacement surgery.
Dr. Boyd Haynes, also with OSC, was totally prepared for my questions about knee replacement. I immediately felt more at ease about the surgery. I did the recommended strengthening exercises prior to surgery. I know this helped me in rehab.
Both of my knee replacements were done as outpatient. Dr. Haynes’ post surgery orders provide for exceptional pain relief. The idea of standing up on a new knee 1-2 hours after surgery is unbelievable, but I did it and was comfortable!
The evening after surgery, Dr. Haynes called to check on me. I have never had a doctor do that…His office called the next day to check again!
I am still rehabbing the 2nd knee. But it is amazing to be able to get out of a chair, walk and stand for extended periods without pain. Now, I kick myself for waiting so long to have knee replacement.
I am forever grateful to Dr. Haynes, Dr. Andrus and the entire OSC team for their expertise and care.
