This is a one year anniversary follow -up review of my right knee total replacement by Dr. Boyd Haynes. As a recap of the prior review, I walked up and down the stairs normally, but carefully, on the twelfth day after surgery. A month after surgery I was walking up and down the stairs normally. I have had continuing recovery as I kept up with the recommended exercises. I have a stationary bicycle and a treadmill that I use regularly, since I was mostly housebound for the last year due to the Covid-19 recommendations to not travel unless necessary. I can do whatever I was able to due before surgery, with no restrictions. My only problem is still some stiffness when trying to squat or sit on a low stool. Sitting down and standing up in a regular chair or sofa is not a problem.
I would highly recommend Dr. Haynes to anyone who is contemplating knee replacement. He, his team and the OSC Physical Therapy team are excellent, and provided the best care I could imagine. Only one caveat: if you have the knee replacement surgery, follow the recommended exercises every day; it will make the recovery much faster.
Had a total knee replacement done recently by Dr. Boyd Haynes at OSC. Well, that was a trip. It was a experience that I was a bit scared of, but I was treated very nice and with total respect. I felt relaxed and had no real heavy duty pain. All nurses were sweet, and I admire Dr. Haynes. Known this Doc for years, and he will always be my OSC Doctor.

Over a period of 2 years, I saw Dr. Boyd Haynes and received cortisone shots to ease pain in my right knee. When the shots failed to help, we decided it was time for total knee replacement surgery. The care to assure the proper diagnosis and resultant solution was done in a very professional manner that instilled confidence that we were on the right path.
The procedure at Mary Immaculate Hospital went very well, and I was home the afternoon of the same day. With the help of pain medication, the physical therapy began in my home the next day. I also had the use of a RomTech therapy cycle for 3 weeks, which gradually helped to stretch and bend my knee. I am still in physical therapy and feeling improvement every day.
I can highly recommend Dr. Haynes and the OSC. Dr. Haynes professional and measured approach to my diagnosis was greatly appreciated. The staff at Mary Immaculate Hospital was very friendly, efficient, and careful especially in this time of the Covid pandemic.
I went for my one year follow-up appointment today with Dr. Boyd Haynes for my total knee replacement surgery. All of my X-rays looked great and he said I had done great. This year has been so good, I was back in the gym in two weeks and I can now do any of the classes I want. The most important thing is I am totally pain free.
Thank you Dr. Haynes, you have been so good and you have such a great bed side manner. I would highly recommend him to all for knee replacement surgery. He’s the Best!!!
I just had a second total knee replacement surgery. The procedure was performed at 8:30 am and I was at home recovering by 12:30 PM. I think I beat the time of his first patient going home that day. No pain.
Dr. Boyd Haynes is fantastic. Went through six doctors before choosing him. I’ve had both knees replaced in the last six months. I highly recommend him.
My name is Laura and I have been living with left knee pain for over two and half years. I cannot take any type of NSAIDs because of a surgery I had over ten years ago. I had visited an orthopaedic specialist at Portsmouth Naval when my pain began. They tried the steroid injections, but refused to do surgery. I had asked them “will I eventually need the surgery?” and both physicians said “yes”, because of my condition being bone-on-bone. My only option was to do Physical Therapy, which I did for over a year, three times a week. I also did water therapy, which was to no avail.
I dealt with the pain. Working 8 hour shifts on my feet constantly did not help the situation. I was told I was too young for knee replacement at (63) even though I already had a total hip replacement five years ago.
Upon turning 65, I was booted out of the military system and into Medicare. I saw a new family practice doctor, who recommended OSC to me. I made an immediate appointment. I was surprised how professional they were and the genuine concern they had for me and my problem. I was ready for another dismissal of my problem, but found Dr. Boyd Haynes listened and gave me several treatment options. I had decided on the surgery and he said that was the best solution.
I had scheduled the surgery date for February and had to cancel due to my low iron levels. I was encouraged to take the course on joint replacement at Mary Immaculate Hospital. I found it was very useful and prepared me for the surgery, along with the exercises to do prior to surgery. I highly recommend taking the class and doing the exercises.
After the COVID-19 delays, I finally had my surgery in June. Its been four weeks and I am healing quickly, but I also do my exercises as recommended by the therapist. I started regular Physical Therapy to get my range of motion back and only have to go twice a week. I am happy that I had a caring physician and nurses to aid in my success story. I highly recommend doing the surgery if you are presented the option and do what is recommended prior and after surgery. I can’t thank Dr. Haynes enough for giving me my life back with no pain.
This was my second knee replacement that Dr. Jeffrey Carlson at OSC did and the second time with these Physical Therapists. Joshua Hancock, LPTA, worked diligently with me and I completed my therapy in six weeks.
The place is very clean and the tables are cleaned and prepped after each patient. The whole staff was so pleasant and attentive the entire time I was there.
I truly appreciate all the work they did with me and in a way, I was sad to leave them. I’m glad I healed as I did, but they were like a second family in my life. I seriously hope I never have to

return for surgery or PT again, but if I should, I will definitely return to OSC and have Dr. Carlson do the surgery and Dr. Tom Toothaker be my therapist with Josh Hancock working with me. Thanks, guys!
My second knee replacement was completed in December 2019 and performed by my most trusted OSC Physician, Dr Boyd Haynes.
Although this knee replacement was physically challenging (due to intense pain and swelling) in the beginning, I had no fears because I knew I was in the best hands of the most professional Physical Therapy Center on the Peninsula, OSC Therapy Center.
Dr. Tom Toothaker, Clinic Director of OSC Physical Therapy and Josh Hancock, Physical Therapist Assistant, guided me through 3+ months of many challenging exercises; various pain relief techniques, motivation when I felt down due to my impatience and professional genuine care!!
Thanks to Dr. Toothaker, PTA Hancock, and the great team of assistants, for improving the quality of my life once again! I am now fully mobile; walking without my cane, squatting and most importantly racing up and down stairs for the first time in many, many years.
My friends can’t believe how well I did with my PT and how I was motivated by the OSC staff! I highly recommend your facility to anyone! Thank you all so much for helping me to walk once again without pain!
I had Total Knee Replacement (TKR) on February 5, 2020. I was so afraid going into this surgery but I can honestly say it was so much better than I expected. Dr. Boyd Haynes did a great job, my knee is so strong now and I can do all of my daily activities…finally! He has such a great bedside manner and answered all my concerns and is so reassuring.
I did Physical Therapy at OSC with Dr. Paige Tretter and Fred Wintermantel. Again, a great experience! They are both excellent and always were encouraging and kept me informed of how I was progressing. A great staff there, from the front desk to the ladies that helped me through my exercises. I appreciate everyone of you.
Again, thank you all so much !!! I’ll definitely recommend OSC.
I’m writing on behalf of my husband. He had a total knee replacement on 2/19/20, performed by OSC’s Dr. Boyd Haynes. I’ve been so impressed with the entire process, from the scheduling of the surgery to how quickly his disability paperwork was submitted, to the entire experience at the hospital. We were both greeted so nicely at Mary Immaculate Hospital..all of the nurses were fantastic, the care he got was great. While he was in the recovery area, one of the nurses called twice to update me on his progress. His surgery was at 7:30 AM and we were home by noon.
That night, I got a call from Dr. Haynes to check on how my husband was doing. That personal touch, is unheard of these days! Encompass Home Health called the night of his surgery and set up times for the nurse and physical therapist to come out to our home the next day. I had 100% confidence in both the nurse and Physical Therapists. The Physical Therapist, Sam, she was fantastic. She really got him moving and motivated. He stopped using the walker most of the time on day 4.
He’s now 3 weeks post-op and no longer is even using the cane. He has been doing outpatient Physical Therapy w/ Dr. Tom Toothaker at OSC, he is really wonderful. He’s following the home exercise program that Tom made for him.
From the spouse’s point of view, this entire experience was wonderful. With Dr. Haynes surgical skill, with the Home Health PT and Tom’s physical therapy program, my husband is having a wonderful recovery. I would highly recommend Dr. Boyd Haynes and OSC to everyone!!
