Dr. Boyd Haynes is an excellent, caring, and well-qualified orthopedic doctor. I started having knee problems in 2007 with a torn meniscus. Dr. Haynes performed arthroscopic surgery on my knee and did an excellent job. Then in March 2015, I started having issues with pain while walking and climbing steps. Before undergoing surgery, Dr. Haynes suggested a series of five Supartz shots for five consecutive weeks. You see, Dr. Haynes is NOT a doctor who would automatically perform surgery if you say you are in pain. He will try all the options first.

So now, it was time for total knee replacement. We set the date for Sept. 9, 2015. Dr. Haynes suggested a class for me (and my husband) to attend that would tell me what to expect before, during, and after surgery. I was also given a booklet with exercises which I was to do BEFORE and AFTER surgery.

TWO HOURS after being in my room after complete knee replacement, I was up and walking, with the help of a walker. The very next morning (with my walker), I was walking UP AND DOWN STEPS! Needless to say, I was released that morning. I had an in-house therapist, who believed in physical EXERCISE and ACTIVITY. After five days, I was able to walk without my walker, and after five more days, I was able to give up my walking cane.

I saw Dr. Haynes on Sept. 9, 2016, exactly one year from my surgery. What did he say? X-rays were excellent…everything was in place just like they should be! I now walk with no limp, climb steps, and ride a bicycle. I can do now what I couldn’t do a year ago with NO PAIN!

I CANNOT say enough positive things about Dr. Boyd Haynes! He IS an awesome doctor, BUT YOU have to do your part! FOLLOW HIS INSTRUCTIONS, EXERCISE, AND EXERCISE!!!

When I was 30, I slipped on some ice and twisted my knee about 180 degrees. It hurt, and it swelled up, but I was very stoic about pain and I pretty much ignored it. The pain and swelling came and went, increasing over time, until I finally said something to my family doctor. By that time, my knee had no cartilage left at all. It was bone grinding on bone. He asked me why I didn’t have it replaced. Well, I was about 54 then and I was under the impression that full knee replacements had to wait until later, like 70 or so. My doctor’s advice was basically: Do it now, while you’re young enough to enjoy life. It was the best advice I ever got, and having my knee replaced is the best gift I’ve ever given myself.

Dr. Haynes did a magnificent job with my replacement. It was a lengthy procedure because I had a lot of damage, but today my knee is better than ever (and it’s been 8 years since my surgery).
Some advice – I worked out with a personal trainer for about 3 months before my surgery because I wanted to be strong so that I would heal quickly. Lots of leg work. I also paid attention to what the physical therapists said, and I did my exercises. You have to. Otherwise, the knee won’t be flexible. I also took my pain meds. I had a co-worker tell me – don’t be stoic. Take the medication. Otherwise, you’ll be in too much pain to do your exercises, and you MUST do your exercises or you won’t heal. That was awesome advice.

I considered my knee replacement a process, like going to college or raising a puppy. You have to want it, prepare for it, and work on it to the exclusion of everything else. If you do, it will pay huge dividends.

Marcilla Waters – Knee Replacements with the ConforMIS System

Dr. Bob Snyder is my hero, a knee doctor, but he cured my shortness of breath!!!

After twenty-plus years of unbearable pain, he magically and skillfully, of course, eliminated ALL pain. While in pain, I didn’t breathe correctly, inhaled a little bit, blew out what was left…of course, my breath was short. Both of my knees were replaced with the ConforMIS System and after 4 weeks, I was back to work.

It was a pleasurable journey. The pain after surgery was well controlled, as was expected. He managed my medication properly, enabling me to exercise as instructed. As long as I have my new knees, I will continue to recommend him to all who need his service. The staff was sincerely caring, knowledgeable and friendly. I was a walking testament…folks commented how well I had progressed and, of course, I had to “advertise”!

Hugh Asbury – Total Knee Replacement

I am an active, 74 year-old man. Over the past ten years, arthritis had gradually damaged my right knee until I could no longer continue the physical activity necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Walking any distance was painful and as I favored my right knee, I began to have pain in my hip and left knee.

I went to see Dr. Haynes at OSC (Orthopaedic and Spine Center) in February 2016. X-rays revealed bone-on-bone arthritis and after cortisone brought no improvement in March 2016, a total knee replacement surgery was scheduled for April 2016. My knee would never get better without surgery. With surgery, not only would it get better, but I could get back to my normal level of activity.

In less than 6 weeks after surgery, I was back to driving and was able to perform many of my outside chores. After two months, I’m walking two miles twice a week and no longer take any arthritis medicine.

I’m so pleased with the results I’ve experienced. A quick recovery takes hard work. You must do the exercises given before the surgery and be diligent in following the direction of the physical therapist after surgery. It takes work to build up the strength that is lost in surgery. I thank God for the great care from my wife, Dr. Haynes and the staff at OSC. Today, I’m healed.

I am getting my second complete knee replacement in two months. The first replacement has left me without that scared feeling of “will it work or will it fail”. The first knee replacement has made me stronger in everything I do. For the first year, I could tell the difference in strength on a regular basis. Sometimes I wonder if I could wear my new knee out from using it so much, so I’m getting the other knee replaced to match. I never thought I would squat down to pick up something again instead of using my back to lift all the time. The first time, I was amazed was when I could reach all the way under my kitchen sink to shut the valve so I could fix a dripping faucet. The list of improvements could go on and on.

Frances Ward – Knee Revision and Replacement

I want to say how thankful I am to have Dr. Burrow as my surgeon. I had suffered with arthritis in both knees for several years. Unfortunately, at the time I decided to have my right knee replaced, I went to another surgeon at a different Orthopedic Group. What an awful mistake. That physician botched my total knee replacement in a 45 minute surgery.

After doing some checking around, I was referred to Dr. Burrow. After getting x-rays and being examined by Dr. Burrow, he informed me that he could do revision surgery and replace everything from the previous surgery. Dr. Burrow made no guarantee, but told me that if I would do my part after surgery, he would do his part to repair my knee. He made me feel very confident that he could help me.

On April 29, 2014 , Dr. Burrow performed the revision surgery. Months after the surgery, I experienced an extreme amount of scar tissue, which I am prone to. Because of the buildup of scar tissue, I was left with a limp, back and hip pain. Again with no guarantee, Dr. Burrow informed me what he could do, and the rest would be up to me. On March 21, 2016, Dr. Burrow removed the excessive scar tissue. After going through physical therapy, I can finally say that I have my life back to normal, I can extend and bend my knee, with no more limping.

Not only did Dr. Burrow repair my right knee, but on September 1, 2015, he did a total knee replacement on my left knee. I spent one night at Mary Immaculate Hospital before going home. From the time I got home and began working with the Physical Therapists, I did not have any problems with my left knee.

I am so thankful to have Dr. Burrow as my surgeon. He is not only a gifted surgeon, but he cares about his patients. I would recommend him to anyone I come in contact with, that is in need of an excellent and gifted surgeon.

Jill Figuenick – Knee Replacements

I had my first knee replacement by Dr. Haynes 10 years ago. I had held off on getting it done for years with very bad pain, because I feared the surgery.

When the day came, Dr Haynes and his staff made me feel very relaxed and I even stayed awake during the surgery. Recovery was not fun, but I got thru it with steady improvement and it wasn’t long before it was just like new. My only regret was waiting so long to do it.

I’m now getting ready to have the other knee done and I don’t have any fear at all this time around, because I know I’ll get good care.

Gary Holsomback – Knee Replacement

I am a 63 year old that had my surgery with Dr. Haynes on 3/4/2015; the surgery was the second for my left knee. In 1983, I fell at my home, tearing the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments, as well as the meniscus in the knee. My care included surgery, follow-up and rehab; five days in the hospital, 8 weeks in a hard cast, 7 weeks in a soft cast and therapy for about 5 months. Why am I referring to this because its in the past–it’s to evidence how much improved the treatment procedures are today.

Dr. Haynes met with me in November of 2014 and we discussed my arthritic condition; I tried an injection of cortisone and revisited Dr Haynes in January,2015; at that time, I advised him of my decision to obtain a full knee replacement.

On March 4, 2015, I had the procedure and went home on 3/5. I followed all recommendations that were given to me by Dr Haynes, his nursing staff, and home healthcare….everything went so well that I told my wife that I could be the “poster child” for the way the procedure should go. I took physical therapy for seven weeks and returned to a part time job on 4/18/15.

I have returned to playing golf and have enjoyed playing WITHOUT a knee brace…last summer was the first time in 32 years that my left leg was tanned…AND NO MORE PAIN!!!!!

I am very pleased with my decision to have Dr. Haynes to do my surgery and appreciate the commitment his staff, including the OSC Physical Therapy group, had for me as a patient.

Debora Adams – Total Knee Replacement

IMG_5708Hello! My name is Debbie Adams. I had been living with osteoarthritis in my knees for over 14 years. I was terrified of a knee replacement and tried many options to avoid having that dreaded surgery. The constant pain and inability to bend or squat made my job as a special needs educator increasingly difficult. When my original orthopedist decided to leave the area, I called for a consultation at OSC.

Upon meeting Dr. Haynes for the first time, he was warm and friendly and seemed genuinely concerned about my condition. He explained the MRI and x-rays of my knee and discussed options. He explained that since I had already undergone arthroscopic surgery as well as countless injections with little relief, it was time to seriously discuss knee replacement. Sensing my hesitation, he thoroughly explained the entire surgical procedure in terms and drawings I could understand and answered all of my questions regarding recovery and prognosis. Before I left the office that day, Dr. Haynes made sure I felt comfortable with my decision, and then surgery was scheduled.

Surgery was a breeze! When I awakened in recovery, Dr. Haynes’ smiling face was the first one I saw. The surgery was very successful and after an overnight stay in the hospital, I went home. I was amazed that my pain was so minimal and was actually able to discontinue pain meds after 5 days. Physical therapy began almost immediately and lasted approximately 7 weeks. PT was hard work and there were days I didn’t want to go because I knew it was going to be uncomfortable. Dr. Haynes had told me it would be hard, but well worth it for the results it would bring…so I persevered. And I am so glad that I did! I exceeded all of my expectations and returned to work with full range of motion.

Today was my one year check-up and my left knee and I passed with flying colors. Dr. Haynes said I could be the poster child for knee replacement and he thought we made a great team!

I am so grateful to Dr. Haynes and the entire OSC team for encouraging me and helping me through this entire journey. I would highly recommend OSC and Dr. Haynes and his team, specifically, for your orthopedic needs. They are awesome!!
