Dr. Martin Coleman is a very experienced surgeon. He has the experience to tell the patient what to expect and to guide the patient through the recovery process so that the recovery is complete. He is patient to listen to your questions and provide complete answers and has an understanding of what the patient will experience during recovery. I will recommend OSC and Dr. Coleman to others.

My right shoulder was gone and giving me a LOT of pain. After having Physical Therapy, the Doctor at OSC took a MRI of my shoulder. After reviewing the outcome of the MRI, my questions were – how do we fix this and how soon? I did not want to wait, putting off surgery would only make me older. I’m 73 and not getting any younger. That’s when the OSC staff took over and booked the surgery at the hospital. A few weeks later, Dr. Martin Coleman did a total reverse shoulder replacement.
After five weeks of Physical Therapy, I was able to swim two laps at the Recreational Center in Williamsburg. I could not swim two strokes before the surgery. Dr. Coleman advised me to do the therapy right after the surgery and follow all the advice of my physical therapist.
Pain was only a issue for two days after surgery. I stopped taking Percocet after two days and just used OTC meds after that. I’m not saying that I had no pain, but it was not that bad. You will have some pain with the Physical Therapy. That will also lessen everyday you do the exercises. My advice is, don’t put surgery off if you are a little on the older side.
The staff and Doctors at OSC are top shelf. Now, MANY THANKS to Dr. Martin Coleman for doing such a GREAT job on my shoulder. I’m sleeping better, working a little in my yard, and living life large. What could be better?

I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation for the phenomenal services of my Physical Therapist, Dr. Jaime Swale. She is the absolute best. I am a 70-year-old female that was suffering from a frozen left shoulder. My upper arm was immobile. She was extremely competent and professional and had me immediately performing exercises that I felt were far beyond my abilities. She was personable, readily listened and responded to my concerns, and adapted her plan to my needs. She and her assistant Joy are the Dynamic Duo.
Thank you so much for pushing me to my limits and helping me to progress smoothly. I sing your praises to my friends and family.
Thank you, Dr. John Burrow, for your thorough follow-up and services for my initial complaint of pain and stiffness in my left shoulder and upper arm. OSC provides you with wonderful services from knowledgeable, experienced, and above all, caring professionals!!

In 2021, Dr. Martin Coleman and I opted for a total reverse shoulder replacement after I shattered my humerus from a fall during my morning run. As he termed it, it’s a “one and done” type of procedure, eliminating the need for potential follow-up surgeries. If choosing this surgery, it’s important to note and follow Dr. Coleman’s instructions completely.
Rehab was hard but worth it. After two months of physical therapy and continued exercise following that, I believe my mobility to be at 90% at 10 months post-surgery. I’m told this is amazing. I am back to running and strength training. Dr. Coleman was very straightforward and explained everything to my satisfaction. The operation was a complete success and I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Coleman to anyone considering shoulder surgery.

My name is Tyler Oaks. I’m a Junior at Eastern Mennonite University and I play on the Men’s Volleyball Team.
I want to share my story about shoulder surgery with Dr. Martin Coleman to help other young people, especially athletes, who may have an injury and are facing a period of uncertainty while they recover.
I was fortunate and had never been injured previously. But in my freshman year at college, my shoulder began hurting and it was affecting my volleyball. It hurt bad enough that I told my mom. Luckily, she works for Orthopaedic and Spine Center in Newport News, VA and she quickly got me in to see Dr. Martin Coleman, an Orthopaedic Shoulder Specialist with the practice. After x-rays, and exam and an MRI, Dr. Coleman diagnosed me with a SLAP tear and tear of the rotator cuff in my right shoulder, which would need surgery to repair. I had surgery in December of 2020.
Recovery took a very long time. I was out freshman year into sophomore year season of volleyball. To be honest, I developed a mild depression during those months of not using my shoulder and then months of stretches and Physical Therapy, wondering if I would ever come back enough to play volleyball again. But I did exactly what Dr. Coleman told me to do, I didn’t drive until he told me I could, and my mom said that you could set your clock by me doing my stretches every day, I was so faithful. I also worked closely with Dr. Jamie Swale, DPT at the OSC Physical Therapy Clinic for six months. She helped keep me motivated, emailed me exercises during COVID-19 when I couldn’t work with my trainers at school and pushed me when I wanted to stop. The communication was always there of what I should be doing and shouldn’t be doing between Dr. Coleman, Dr. Swale, and myself. After about six months, I got to go to volleyball practice, but was very limited in what I could do. Dr. Coleman did not want me to retear his great surgical work!
After a year of recovery, I am back on the court, playing, feeling brand new and my shoulder barely hurts at all. If I had to give any piece of advice to someone who is going through the same situation as I was, keep fighting and don’t give up; it’s about the end result, not always about what is happening right now. Don’t give up!

My shoulder problems started gradually and ended up limiting me to what I could do. It was keeping me from being able to kayak, swim, and do general housekeeping around our home and grounds.
I consulted with Dr. Martin Coleman, who took a very matter-of-fact attitude, suggesting a plan that started with physical therapy, but could lead to surgery, if that did not work. When we reached the point of surgery being the best option, he made it very clear that he could repair the shoulder, but for that to be a success, I would need to follow his instructions throughout a 6-9 month recovery process. Without my willingness to follow his instructions, I could damage the repair, negating the benefit of surgery. This had to be a partnership.
His initial instructions were to let my shoulder heal, but to maintain some motion that would make the recovery shorter and less painful. I kept my arm in a sling for a month and for two months lifted nothing heavier than a “cup of coffee”. He did not recommend physical therapy, but again, wanted to let the shoulder heal.
Now at the 3-month point, his instructions are to gradually increase my activities in 10% increments over the next several months, and to “listen” to my shoulder. I was surprised that Dr. Coleman still did not recommend physical therapy for me, as I know many people go through that. But I have no complaints. My shoulder is definitely improving to where I notice it less and less. I have just started to very gradually return to swimming, and my shoulder is feeling better and my range of motion is steadily improving each week. At this point, I must admit it was worth it, largely because he did his job, and I followed his instructions.

I would like to thank Dr. Boyd Haynes for what he did for me. I suffered for over two years with a hip problem. I saw another doctor for quite a while, but no surgery. Later on, another doctor told me to see Dr. Boyd. He has the best manner with me. He operated on me, to do total hip replacement and the surgery was a success. He is an excellent surgeon and a beautiful person. I recommend him to all I know. I thank God for him.

Dr. Cody Leeworthy, thank you for your caring and guiding my therapy after reverse shoulder replacement surgery. Thank you so much, Fred Wintermantel, LPTA, for your expertise and knowledge while working on my neck and especially after my shoulder surgery. You took the time to explain how the muscles are put together, work and knew just how much to push to get everything working again. My recuperation was complete and very uneventful.

Thank you, Dr. Martin Coleman, for alleviating the constant pain in my right shoulder. I had heard all the horror stories about shoulder replacement that never came to be. Must be the Reverse Shoulder procedure that made the whole experience relatively pain free. I was driving at about 8 days and back to work in 11 days. Finished physical therapy now and feeling great. Thank you.
