My knees had been bone-on-bone for some time. I had tried gel and cortisone injections when I lived in Florida. Surgery worried me; the surgery itself, fear of uncontrolled pain, the rehab and the downtime. Dr. Jenny Andrus, Pain Management Specialist at OSC, provided another option: nerve blocks. These did give me temporary relief and the time I needed to come to grips with having knee replacement surgery.
Dr. Boyd Haynes, also with OSC, was totally prepared for my questions about knee replacement. I immediately felt more at ease about the surgery. I did the recommended strengthening exercises prior to surgery. I know this helped me in rehab.
Both of my knee replacements were done as outpatient. Dr. Haynes’ post surgery orders provide for exceptional pain relief. The idea of standing up on a new knee 1-2 hours after surgery is unbelievable, but I did it and was comfortable!
The evening after surgery, Dr. Haynes called to check on me. I have never had a doctor do that…His office called the next day to check again!
I am still rehabbing the 2nd knee. But it is amazing to be able to get out of a chair, walk and stand for extended periods without pain. Now, I kick myself for waiting so long to have knee replacement.
I am forever grateful to Dr. Haynes, Dr. Andrus and the entire OSC team for their expertise and care.
I love OSC and the doctors there. I see three OSC doctors, but I think I see Dr. Raj Sureja the most. I have a bad back and Dr. Sureja keeps my pain under control…I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The staff and Doctors are all top notch and use cutting-edge procedures. I always know that they have my best interest at heart!
Everything was top notch and so more professional than other pain clinics. The entire staff made me feel like family, which is something missing from many Medical organizations. What I liked best about my visit to OSC, was interacting with your staff, all of them, from administrative staff to Dr. Raj Sureja!
The staff at OSC were warm and welcoming. Dr.Raj Sureja and his nurse have a good relationship, marked by humor and respect. I was impressed by the time the doctor took with me and plan of care.
The X-Ray folks had a new machine and were working through it with great teamwork and humor – they had a student with them who was clearly being well trained.
This group took time and despite my “severe” i.e., aging spine issues, I liked that Dr. Raj noted that I do NOT have a back ache, because the pain came on acutely and has hung around for a year, so it might be something other than spine in origin and he is going to help me out.
They all worked as a team, from the reception staff to the physician. This is the hallmark of a successful practice. I was impressed with the whole gang! I didn’t have to wait an hour! Everyone was very friendly.
I am very pleased with the service that I receive at OSC. The staff that greets you on the second floor, prior to your procedure, are fantastic, very courteous and professional. Dr. Raj Sureja and his nurses are also courteous and very professional. They provide outstanding customer service…and also, procedures that help alleviate my pain.
My name is Andrea Luke. I am a mother of two and a registered nurse. I injured my back at the age of 32 when lifting a patient at work. I spent many years in pain.
My injury resulted in five spine surgeries, many tests and countless procedures. My last surgery was a four level fusion that stopped any further deterioration, but left me with chronic pain. I became unable to work as a nurse. Everyday tasks were difficult and I missed out on many activities with my children. In addition to nursing, I loved to ski, mountain bike, hike and scuba dive, all of which I could no longer do. Medications helped my pain but did not take it away completely. Plus, I never felt like myself when taking the meds.
I found Dr. Raj Sureja and he worked with me to combat my chronic pain. We tried injections and epidurals, but I did not get sufficient relief. He suggested a spinal cord stimulator and after a while, I finally agreed. My neurostimulator was a complete success. I now take no medication whatsoever. I work full-time as a high-risk Labor and Delivery Nurse in Norfolk and I live a full, active and PAIN FREE life. Neurostimulation was a complete game changer for me. Thank you, Dr. Sureja!
While in my twenties, I had a work injury at the Newport News Shipyard and hurt my lower back. I’ve tried pretty much every treatment for my back, including two spine surgeries. I’ve gotten steroid epidural injections at OSC and while they helped, the pain never goes away. My wife heard about the Mindfulness for Chronic Pain Management Program at OSC, with Dr. Cal Robinson, on the radio and she basically made me attend.
I learned about meditation and breathing in the class and I stuck with it. Dr. Robinson helped me to understand how Mindfulness works. About halfway through the class, I realized that by using the techniques he taught, I could bring my pain down from a Level Seven to about a Level Three in just a minute, thirty seconds. It is incredible that I can do this by focusing my attention on my breath and by breathing deeply.
I was so impressed by the positive effects of Mindfulness on my pain, I continued to study after the class was over. I wanted to take all of what I had learned and to pay it forward to others. I now teach Mindfulness, have become a Reiki Master, and teach qi gong, pronounced “Chi kong”, which is a form of walking meditation, and Tai Chi. I created my own meditation CD, set to music, so that others can purchase or download the meditations from Spotify. I have started my own business called It’s Your Journey, to help others learn how to positively change their lives for the better through Mindfulness, Meditation and other principles.
This journey of mine started because I learned a better way of dealing with my pain. I am grateful to Dr. Robinson for giving me the tools I needed to live a better life.
My initial phase of treatment was for back pain in 2013 with Dr. Mark McFarland. He didn’t jump right in with the knife, but did the best they could with what they had. This year, I saw Dr. Raj Sureja and Monica Beckett – NP, while I awaited a multi-level fusion with Dr. Jeffrey Carlson.
The care, treatment and overall professionalism of the entire staff was exceptional and exceeded my expectations at every level both pre- and post-op. With social media presence and with both good and bad reviews widely available, I was skeptical. However, I can not say enough good things about the staff. They were very pleasant and concerned and I have seen quite of few members of their entire staff. I would refer my parents, children and others I care about for treatment here, without question.
Dr. Carlson performed my multi-level lumbar fusion and the difference was incredible. Recovery takes time, but ultimately, I could tell he had solved the underlying issues for which I was being treated and had done so with informative care and precision. Excellent faculty, facility and the very best Doctors in my opinion. It was and is very important that I get back to work quickly and their number one concern was restoring my ability to resume as many activities as possible and to live as limitless of a life as possible. To Drs. Carlson, McFarland, Sureja and your staff, you’re excellent providers when I couldn’t say anything but the best regarding your service and care.
Dr. Jeffrey Carlson referred me to the OSC Pain Management Clinic and, having been there on a few occasions, I have filtered through most of the staff. Each and every time I have been there, it’s been a positive experience for me. All of the staff, from the reception area to the treatment areas, are professional, friendly and kind. The place is run like a well-oiled wheel.
No pain in my left hip, 6 months after stem cell therapy!
Thank you, Dr. Sureja!
