Testimonials: Physical Therapy

Nieta Blount – Multi-Level Lumbar Spine Fusion Surgery

Image of Dr. Jeffrey CarlsonDr. Jeffrey Carson performed spine surgery on me in March 20th. This procedure was very blessed. I had a speedy recovery and the healing process has gone very well, for being less than 30 days post-surgery. Dr. Carlson first sent Physical Therapy to my home and I am now at OSC Physical Therapy.

My testimonial is that I would recommend him to anyone that’s having back problems.  Go see Dr. Carson at OSC!  He’s the best doctor I have experienced. Thank you, Dr. Carlson!

Stephen Smith – Hip Replacement Surgery

Image of Dr. Boyd HaynesI want to thank Dr. Boyd Haynes and his staff for the positive experience at OSC. I had my right hip replaced in March 2017 after being in pain for several years.

From the initial meeting with Dr. Haynes to the pre- and post-operation discussions, Dr. Haynes helped guide me through the maze of questions I had. The surgery was quick and the physical therapy helped me get back to normal activities in minimal time.

It’s been a year and I’m back to playing racquet ball, golfing, and just about anything else I want to do. There is no pain and I have pretty much a full range of motion. If you are having hip pain that is impacting your quality of life, don’t wait. Get with OSC and Dr. Haynes to get you back on your feet. As I did, you’ll wish you had done it much sooner!

Frank Hunyady – Physical Therapy after Lumbar Spine Fusion Surgery

Image of Jamie Swale, DPTWhat sets Dr. Jamie Swale apart from the typical Physical Therapy is her keen ability to target treatment with one’s life style and pursuits in mind. After my initial evaluation, she developed an exercise set for me to increase range of motion and strength as they related to golf… my pursuit.

She proves a most pleasant, yet focused therapist who makes certain every minute of treatment time is spent productively. (No joking around, let’s get to work!)

I have already recommended Dr. Swale to my golfing buddies with the assurance they will be working with the best.

Linda Vernell Bateman – Multi-level Spine Lumbar Fusion Surgery

Image of Linda BatemanMy experience at OSC with Dr. Jeffrey Carlson has just been amazing.

In August 2017, I had a MRI in the open MRI at OSC.  The MRI showed degenerative disc disease, severe spinal stenosis, bulging disc, and spurs on each side of spinal canal, involving levels L2 through S1. My back didn’t hurt, but my right leg felt tight and standing straight was uncomfortable.

I met with Dr. Carlson in September 2017. Dr. Carlson told me I needed surgery, but suggested a steroid  injection to see if it helped and it did. I felt great, but it only lasted about a month. I had 2 more injections.

My surgery was done at Mary Immaculate Hospital on February 12th. Dr. Carlson did a multi-level fusion, removed the bone spurs, and relieved the pressure on the spinal column. I stayed one night at hospital. Dr. Carlson and his team were incredible. I wasn’t even bruised.

I followed the post-op instructions, with the help and guidance from Personal Touch Home Health. Margaret and Julie were just wonderful and the suggestions they gave me really helped. I really wasn’t in pain, but I did feel the nerves and muscles in my leg “waking up”, which was a strange feeling, but not painful. Now, I feel absolutely amazing.   I have full range of movement, the incision looks great. I am in Physical Therapy to strengthen core muscles. I didn’t know how much my back was bothering me.

I hope you’re reading this if you need surgery or if you are putting it off, rest assured, I highly recommend Dr. Carlson. I am very grateful to him for giving me back my ability to live my life to my full potential. Take Care of You!

Mike Nall – L4-5 Microdiscectomy Surgery and Physical Therapy

Image of Mike Nall crossing the finish line at the One City MarathonOn the morning of July 23, 2017, I woke up to severe pain in my left leg, starting in my hip and going all the way down to my big toe. After initial treatment from my family doctor didn’t fix the problem, I was referred to Dr. Jeffrey Carlson.

He diagnosed me with a ruptured L4/L5 disc and for me, the only recommended treatment was surgery. On August 30, 2017, Dr. Carlson performed a microdiscectomy to repair my disc. The operation was a huge success.

Dr. Carlson prescribed physical therapy for me and I decided to go with OSC’s physical therapy group. I am so glad I chose them. For 8 weeks, Dr. Tom Toothaker and his incredible staff (Fred, Taylor and Zac) put me through intense therapy.

I cannot express my gratitude enough for the professionalism and quality of service I received from both Dr. Carlson and Dr. Toothaker and their staff. As a testament, this past Sunday, March 4, 2018, I ran the One City Marathon 6 months post op! My back has never felt this great in a long time. Thanks to the treatment I received at OSC, I look forward to many more running miles!

J. Joseph – Cervical Disc Fusion Surgery & Physical Therapy

Image of Dr. Jeffrey CarlsonExcellent group of doctors, assistants, and wonderful physical therapy team!

I had been referred to see an orthopedic surgeon. So I did some research online and came across a few in Hampton Roads. After reading the reviews and testimonials from the different practices, my decision was made and I chose to go with OSC.

On my first appointment, options were discussed and the worst case scenario was given. Dr. Jeffrey Carlson requested a better imaging scan done so that he could fully assess what my situation was. I ended up having to have a bone fusion done in my neck due to some ruptured discs. I had no idea I had a ruptured disc! Thought it was just muscle problems. The issue was so bad, we had no alternative. I was beginning to have problems walking, getting up from a seated position, losing strength in my hands and arms, and some other issues associated with it.

After my surgery, almost immediately I had the strength back in my hands and I could get up without a problem again. You are out the same day as your surgery. Dr. Carlson made sure to try to reassure you a bit right before your surgery and does come check on you while you are in recovery. The follow up appointments he wants to know your progress and any issues you may be having.

Over a year later, the bones have mended nicely and the fusion has taken place well. No real problems from it besides the cold weather. Neck wear is a must in colder temps!

Physical therapy helped a great deal in getting mobility and flexibility back. The key thing is that you have to tell them what is going on. They can guide you and help, but without feedback, they can not zero in on problem areas. You’ve got to let them know where it is bothering you and if a certain movement helps or hinders you. If you feel you need continued therapy when it gets near your release time, speak up. They will do their best to help you out and get you back on your feet again.

I would recommend this practice to anyone that is in need of their services. They are a great group and also do many things in the community. They carry themselves well, have a wide variety of collective knowledge and the best thing they have, that is harder to find in doctors any more, is that they do care about their patients.

Rudolph Pazdernik – Physical Therapy

Image of Dr. Tom ToothakerDr. Tommy Toothaker and his team are terrific. Six weeks ago, I was tottering and shuffling like an old man, constantly afraid I was losing my balance. Well, I am 87, so I didn’t think they could do too much for me. But was I ever surprised!

Today, they have me walking better than I have in years. And my balance has improved 100%. I would gladly recommend OSC Physical Therapy to anybody. In fact, I have already given their folders to a couple of friends. I just can’t say enough good things about them!

May Horrocks – Physical Therapy for Leg and Heel Pain

Image of Jim Koske, MPTI had suffered a lot of pain in the back of my right leg into my heel where I noticed quite a large swelling. I was referred to OSC under the care of Jim Koske, MPT. Jim put together a regimen of exercise’s for me and put Bill Richards, LPTA, in charge of my massaging.

I now have no leg pains as I walk, and the swelling on the heel has lessened a great deal. This is not the first time that I have been treated in this establishment and I can honestly say, each and every time has been a good experience for me. The staff from the front desk onward are friendly and caring, its a joy to be among them.
