Graffie B. Edler, Jr. – Lumbar Spinal Fusion Surgery

I’ll make this short and to the point. My name is Graffie B. Edler Jr. I had been having minor lower back problems for years but dismissed it as sciatica. As the years went on, my occasional numbness turned to pain. Eventually, my pain got to the point I couldn’t dismiss it any longer. I decided to seek a chiropractor which helped very little but did reveal my problems were more than sciatica. I had my chiropractor refer me to a neurologist because the spinal pain was getting unbearable.

Moving forward, my chiropractor referred me to Dr. Jeffrey Carlson. After sitting down with him and going over all options it seemed spinal fusion was my best option. Yes, I had friends and family tell me ( “No don’t do it. You’re talking about your spine “). The fear they had was something would go wrong. I had that same fear but put my trust in my supreme being and Dr. Carlson. After surgery, I spent one night in the hospital for observation. I felt muscular discomfort from surgery but no spinal pain. My recovery consisted of light exercise with no bending, lifting, or twisting. After six weeks of light exercising, I started the recommended physical therapy.

Now, I’m happy to say I’m back to work pain free. I have thanked Dr. Carlson several times for being a knowledgeable and skilled surgeon. If you can relate to this testimonial. I recommend you at least have a consultation with Dr. Carlson.

Betty Deans – Physical Therapy for Musculoskeletal Injury

Just recently finished my Physical Therapy at OSC and wanted to say to anyone that is looking to go into therapy, you hopefully have a choice where you want to go.  My experience at OSC (Orthopaedic & Spine Center) was a very positive one.  I found each and every person I dealt with extremely personable, professional and made me feel a part of a team, oriented with one goal, to get me back to pre-injury status.

My team was Dr. Jamie Swale, DPT, Jonathan LoRusso PTA, Cait, & Chad. Hopefully, I won’t have to have anymore physical therapy, BUT if I do, you can be assured it will be at OSC.

Kenneth Chaney – Physical Therapy for Muscle Injury

I am 82 years of age and have been suffering with a muscle injury for over 5 years and was taking Dry Needling. It was suggested that I participate in the Physical Training Program.

Tom Toothaker, DPT and his assistant Rachel, guided me in this endeavor and I was released on November 3, 2020. Their constant guidance and insurance that I complete each exercise properly has resulted in almost a pain free movement of my muscle injury.

I would like to thank them for their time and patience and for giving me a new lease on life. They should be congratulated for a job well done. My thanks to Dr. Jeffrey Carlson for his referral.

Shawn Ross – Physical Therapy

There are not enough words to describe Dr.  Tom Toothaker. He is the best doctor I’ve ever had. He pushed me to do my exercises and called me out when he thought I wasn’t doing my best. His bedside manner is 2nd to none. He made me very comfortable from our 1st appointment until my last. I would highly recommend him to any and everyone. And if I ever need Physical Therapy again, I will come back to him.

Robert Lockard – Physical Therapy

Dr. Paige Tretter did a great job…very clear on information and instructions. Her Physical Therapy Assistants were very helpful as well.

This was my second experience with OSC Physical Therapy and have been well-treated each time.  I’m also very satisfied with their COVID-19 precautions.

Madelyn Peck – Physical Therapy

Love this place. Everybody treats you like a special individual person who needs help.

Josh Hancock LPTA, was very professional in helping me with my therapy, which has helped me a lot. I’m still doing my exercises at home.

By the way, I have been to three different therapy places, and this place is the one to go to. Trust me.

Laura Moncure- Total Knee Replacement

Image of Dr. Boyd HaynesMy name is Laura and I have been living with left knee pain for over two and half years. I cannot take any type of NSAIDs because of a surgery I had over ten years ago. I had visited an orthopaedic specialist at Portsmouth Naval when my pain began. They tried the steroid injections, but refused to do surgery. I had asked them “will I eventually need the surgery?”  and both physicians said “yes”, because of my condition being bone-on-bone. My only option was to do Physical Therapy, which I did for over a year, three times a week. I also did water therapy, which was to no avail.

I dealt with the pain. Working 8 hour shifts on my feet constantly did not help the situation. I was told I was too young for knee replacement at (63) even though I already had a total hip replacement five years ago.

Upon turning 65, I was booted out of the military system and into Medicare. I saw a new family practice doctor, who recommended OSC to me. I made an immediate appointment. I was surprised how professional they were and the genuine concern they had for me and my problem. I was ready for another dismissal of my problem, but found Dr. Boyd Haynes listened and gave me several treatment options. I had decided on the surgery and he said that was the best solution.

I had scheduled the surgery date for February and had to cancel due to my low iron levels. I was encouraged to take the course on joint replacement at Mary Immaculate Hospital.  I found it was very useful and prepared me for the surgery, along with the exercises to do prior to surgery. I highly recommend taking the class and doing the exercises.

After the COVID-19 delays, I finally had my surgery in June.  Its been four weeks and I am healing quickly, but I also do my exercises as recommended by the therapist. I started regular Physical Therapy to get my range of motion back and only have to go twice a week. I am happy that I had a caring physician and nurses to aid in my success story. I highly recommend doing the surgery if you are presented the option and do what is recommended prior and after surgery. I can’t thank Dr. Haynes enough for giving me my life back with no pain.

Signed,

Laura Moncure

Melanie Johnson – Physical Therapy for Post-Surgical C-5 Nerve Palsy

On Dec 9, 2019, Dr. Jeffrey Carlson performed a posterior cervical laminectomy and inserted four rods in my spine to relieve compression of my spinal cord. The surgery went well and as always, Dr. Carlson did a great job. However, after I woke up, I found that I couldn’t use my left arm. I had a complication called a C-5 palsy, which means because the nerves between that cervical vertebrae had been compressed for so long, they had been damaged and I was going to have to “re-learn” how to use that arm.

I had physical therapy at home for about five weeks. It was determined it could be up to a year or more for me to gain the use of my arm. Mid-January, I was released to PT at OSC’s Physical Therapy Center and saw Dr. Paige Tretter for an evaluation. At that time, I could lift my left arm at about 25 degrees in front of me, couldn’t bear any weight on it or lift more than a couple of pounds. A program was set up for me and I began working with one of the therapists for about three weeks and he did a good job. But after that, I began working with Fred Wintermantel, LPTA.

Fred Wintermantel, LPTAOver the next four months, Fred worked the program that was set up for me, but he went above and beyond during each appointment to adapt therapy for me that met my specific needs to help continue healing for my neck and to help me regain the use of my arm. He would always ask how I was feeling when I came in. He would listen, really listen, and then work through my program and add or take away exercises that would better help me progress. My exercises were often difficult & sometimes painful, but I always felt encouraged to push through as I felt comfortable. Another helpful thing he did was to explain WHY we did some of the exercises we did. He would explain how using certain muscles or movements were going to help me heal. g with at the moment, because he always gave 100% to each patient, but this just shows the commitment to what he does.

Each month I would follow up with Dr. Tretter to see if I should continue my therapy. She, too, is committed to the care of her patients and always supported me continuing until we felt I was doing well enough to work on my own. She was often amazed at the progress I was making each month knowing what my prognosis was initially.

Dr. Paige Tretter

After four and half months of therapy at OSC with Fred, I am now able to lift my arm over my head, bear weight on my shoulder, use weights in my exercises and have close to 100% mobility in that arm. I still have numbness and have to limit the weight I lift/carry with my arm and believe I’ll get to 100% , but I know that had I not worked with Fred over these last months, I would be nowhere near I am now in my healing process

The skill, heart and motivation he has for his patients is not often seen and OSC should be thankful for quality employees such as Fred Wintermantel, LPTA and Dr. Paige Tretter .

Jackie Smith – Physical Therapy for Rotator Cuff Surgeries & a Shoulder Manipulation

Jamie Swale, PT, DPTThank you doesn’t begin to express how grateful I am for having the absolute BEST Physical Therapy Team in the area. Having had two rotator cuff surgeries, a shoulder manipulation, and almost 17 months of PT, I know I could not have made it through without this dedicated team. There were days I was ready to give up, but Dr. Jamie Swale and the entire team were supportive, encouraging, and I always left PT with my attitude adjusted and ready to tackle another day.

I highly recommend OSC PT – you cannot ask for anyone better!
