Otis Hooper – Hip Replacement Surgery

I am a 6th degree black belt in Taekwondo, and the executive director and instructor of my own boxing and martial arts gym here in Newport News, The Peninsula Boxing Academy, Inc. After fighting professional Karate matches for approximately three years, I turned to the professional boxing ring as a Junior Welterweight, where I later became a sparring partner for the former World Welterweight Champion, Sugar Ray Leonard.

Over the years, my body had begun to wear down from decades of dedicated rigorous physical activity, and I was unable to move around and teach my students to the level I needed. When the pain began specifically in my left hip, I spoke with my primary care doctor to learn what my options were. She referred me to Dr. John Burrow at the Orthopaedic & Spine Center. After my visit with him, it was determined that I would need a hip replacement. I had a few close friends who had successful hip replacements themselves, but nevertheless, I was still nervous!

However, Dr. Burrow and his team made me feel extremely comfortable. Now, I am only 6 weeks post-surgery, and I am out raking leaves, pushing the wheelbarrow in my yard and back to teaching boxing at night! I thought it would be at least 6 months to get to where I am feeling now, but because of the care I received from Dr. Burrow, I am back in the gym and able to do all the things I wasn’t able to prior to my hip replacement.

I would recommend Dr. Burrow and the team at Orthopaedic & Spine Center to anyone!
