What is a Stress Fracture?

stress fracture is an overuse injury that occurs when muscles become fatigued during activity.  The overload of stress is transferred from the muscle to the bone causing tiny cracks.  These miniscule fissures are known as Stress Fractures. A majority occur in the lower leg, which is heavily used during sports such as basketball, tennis and running.  Females get them more often than males.  Rest is the best treatment, but this is hard for many athletic individuals.  Preventing them is easier and involves stretching, cross-training, using the right shoes and equipment, eating a healthful diet and getting prompt treatment.
