Dr. Jeffrey Carlson Completes Spine Fusion With SpineFrontier\’s Less Exposure Surgery Technology: REmind Midline Pedicle Screws
LES Surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Carlson Performs Lumbar Spine Fusion With SpineFrontier’s REmind Midline Pedicle Screws for Less Exposure Surgery; Patient Was Discharged Home Two Hours After Surgery
New Port News, Virginia (PRWEB) February 23, 2014
SpineFrontier’s Less Exposure Surgery technology was recently utilized to complete an L4-L5 Fusion on a 45-year-old female patient. Using this cutting edge technology, Dr. Jeffrey Carlson successfully used LES REmind pedicle screws to resolve a previous diagnosis of facet arthropathy, neural foraminal stenosis, Grade 1 spondylolisthesis and degenerative disc disease, causing the patient lower back pain and sciatica. Dr. Carlson is the first to perform this surgery in Virginia.
Dr. Carlson described the case: “We used REmind screw technology for this operation. The exposure was half of what we would normally require, because we’re not taking the dissection out of the tips of the transverse process, which maintains the capsule anatomy. Less dissection is needed, medial to lateral, which keeps blood loss to a minimum. We put in REmind Screws, which are texturized with a resorbable blast media coating that promotes fast bone ingrowth and ensures a tight fit.
The patient was discharged to go home two hours after the procedure and has recovered rapidly. There was less pain, less blood loss and less surgical trauma. She will be able to get back to her normal lifestyle more quickly, thanks to both LES techniques and REmind screws.
So far, we’ve been very happy with SpineFrontier’s innovative techniques. They provide an enhanced way to perform lumbar fusion, through the same incision and same anatomy, with an unchanged thought-process, better technique, and superior instrumentation. Using SpineFrontier’s medial pedicle screws enables the surgeon to keep the same 6mm diameter screw that we would have used in a standard pedicle screw procedure. It provides excellent fixation.”
Dr. Carlson received his M.D. from George Washington University in 1993 and completed his residency in orthopaedics at Harvard Medical School Hospitals, including Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also completed two fellowships, one in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery and a Spine Surgery Fellowship. He is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, focused on treating spine disorders. He is a managing partner of the Orthopaedic and Spine Center in Newport News, VA and served as the Chief-of-Surgery at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital.
Dr. Carlson is a long-time supporter of the Arthritis Foundation. As an expert in his field, he has published and lectured extensively on the subject of orthopaedics and has appeared on television several times. In 2008, Dr. Carlson was one of the first surgeons in his area to perform a cervical disc replacement.
The LES Philosophy
“The Less Exposure Surgery Philosophy is to lessen exposure proportionately for maximum effectiveness, using safe, easy to adopt, reproducible techniques to preserve anatomy, lessen blood loss, surgical time, and exposure to radiation for a rapid and less painful outpatient recovery.” TM
