My name is Randy Firth, and I recently underwent back surgery at Orthopaedic & Spine Center (OSC) under the care of Dr. Carlson. I initially visited Dr. Carlson due to severe sciatica that had progressed to the point where after a couple of minutes, I could hardly walk. The pain was excruciating, radiating from my buttock down my leg and into my toes, making it impossible to concentrate on anything.
From my first appointment, Dr. Carlson was incredibly thorough. He reviewed my x-rays to determine the problem. He explained the causes of sciatica, which in my case was due to a herniated disc. He also pointed out that I had significant arthritis, which was another issue I would need to manage. He recommended an MRI to get a clearer picture and determine the best course of action. The MRI was scheduled promptly and conveniently at the facility, which even offered night hours.
After the MRI, Dr. Carlson provided a detailed explanation of the problem and the necessary surgical procedure. He outlined what I needed to do before and after the surgery, what to expect, and the timeline for recovery. Because of the intense pain, I was actually looking forward to the surgery. I could not speak more highly about the excellent communication and care which had been provided.
The preparation for surgery was seamless, with numerous text reminders and the ability to pre-register online. The surgery was performed at Coastal Virginia Surgery Center, a facility that felt more like a comfortable office than a hospital. The staff were exceptional, making me feel at ease throughout the process.
The surgery itself was a success. I woke up in the recovery room with significantly reduced sciatica pain, and the improvement continued over the next month as promised. Remarkably, I didn’t need any pain medication post-surgery. I was back to work part-time the following Monday and full-time the next week.
During my follow-up visit, Dr. Carlson released me to resume most activities, with a restriction on lifting over 20 pounds. After another four weeks and additional x-rays, I was cleared to do anything I wanted. The transformation from debilitating pain to feeling great is incredible.
I want to commend and thank everyone at OSC and Coastal Virginia Surgery Center. Dr. Carlson and his team provided outstanding care, and I highly recommend them to anyone in need of orthopedic or spine surgery. I will certainly share my positive experience with others.
